It is with great sorrow that the Maffei Family announces the passing of their beloved mother, Estelle Rocchina Maffei, age 95, of Port St. Lucie, FL. on January 14, 2024. She will now be reunited with her husband Nello (March 11, 1992), her siblings Jimmy, Catherine, Peter, Lucy, Annie, Rose, Jerry and Theresa, and her parents Rocchina Carnevale and Frank Carnevale. She leaves behind her three children, Kenneth Maffei, Robert Maffei and Joyce Schmidt along with their spouses Pia Maffei, Diane Maffei and Steve Schmidt. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Kimberly Lomelino, Kristi Saliba, Stephen Schmidt, Nicholas Schmidt, Caitlin Schmidt and Sarah Herlihy, as well as her great grandchildren, Cameron Saliba, Rees Lomelino, Maxwell Lomelino, and Maeve Herlihy.
Estelle was born in Newark, N.J. on October 22, 1928 and was raised with her 8 siblings. They lived in a building above a store that her parents owned on the corner of Cutler and 6th Street. Shortly after getting married she gave birth to her first child Kenneth in Newark, then soon moved to Roselle Park, N.J. where she gave birth to Robert and Joyce. The family moved to Clark N.J. in 1963, where Estelle enjoyed the traditional role of housewife. The weekends were never dull, as family and friends were always on hand. If there weren't get togethers at the house, the family would be visiting aunts and uncles or other family friends. And then in the summers there were the wonderful trips to the Jersey shore and picnic outings in the Orange mountains. After the children grew up and left the nest, Estelle and Nello moved to Forked River, N.J., where Estelle established new friendships and enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City. During this period she and Nello made once in a lifetime trips to the western United States and to Italy. Several years after Nello's passing in 1992, Estelle moved to Port St. Lucie, FL. She would often visit Kenneth in California or Robert and Joyce in New Jersey. She was known in her senior living complex as the extraordinary woman who walked 5 miles a day until she was in her early 90s. At this time her greatest joy was the births of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was fortunate to visit New Jersey to see them all at Christmas, 2023 just days before her final illness.
Her family and friends will always remember her zest for life, devotion to her children, her laughter, and her giving spirit. Everyone who knew her was touched by her kind-hearted, energetic, outgoing personality.
A funeral blessing and visitation will be held in Forked River, N.J, on Saturday, January 27, beginning at 11:00 A.M. at Layton's Home for Funerals, located at 250 W Lacey Road, Forked River, NJ 08731.
We would be honored if you choose direct donations to Treasure Coast Hospice, who compassionately took care of her in her final days. For online donations please visit www.treasurehealth.org/292/Donate.
Per Estelle's wishes she will be laid to rest at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth, NJ.
