Dr. Flora M. Barlotta, of Lanoka Harbor NJ, passed into eternal life on June 13, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was 83 years old. Dr. Barlotta was a graduate of The College of St. Elizabeth (1958) and the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry (1962). She completed her medical residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center NYC and her fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Columbia University. She was Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology. Her career started at Jersey City Medical Center, but most of her career was at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. While at St. Barnabas, she served as Chief of the Division of Hematology and Chair of the Bioethics Committee. The Barlotta Lecture is an annual event at the now RWJ/Barnabas Health in Livingston and was created by the Bioethics Committee to honor Dr. Barlotta for her service. She also held an academic appointment at UMDNJ and was active in local medical affairs. Dr. Barlotta was passionate in her care of patients and in her commitment to medical education. She will always be remembered by her family and friends for her love of medicine, books, quilting and classical music.
Following her retirement in 1996, Dr. Barlotta resettled on Whidbey Island in Washington State for 18 years where she served as the “community member and advisor” to the Bioethics Committee at Whidbey General Hospital. She returned to New Jersey in 2013 where she lived close by her niece in Ocean County.
She is predeceased by her parents, Frank and Lena Barlotta and is survived by her beloved sister, Frances Scott Jellison of Port Charlotte, FL. She also leaves her nieces and nephews, Donald Scott of DeLand, FL, Christine Olivieri of Norwich CT, Elaine Tirella (Joe) of Forked River NJ, Dale Logarzo (Joe) of Andover NJ, Gregory Scott (Marianne) of Kunkletown PA, Francis Scott of East Hanover NJ and Stephen Scott (Lana) of Hopatcong NJ. She also leaves many grand-nieces and nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends. We will be forever grateful to all her healthcare aides, especially Valen & Cheryl, who were with her to the end.
