John William McClung Jr. was called home to God and his late wife Elaine on November 6, 2021. Born in Newark, NJ on October 18, 1941, to the late John W. McClung Sr and Rose (Piereth) McClung, John graduated from East Orange High School and joined the Navy in 1959.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses, John McClung, Paul and Lisa McClung, Thomas and Florence McClung, and Sherri and Thomas Kachala, as well as his ten grandchildren: Ryan McClung, Michael McClung, Sara McClung, Andrea McClung, Daniel (Danny) McClung, Ashley McClung, Matthew McClung, Elaine (Ellie) Kachala, Thomas (T.J) Kachala, and Sienna Kachala, and his sister and her husband Joan and Ernie Cwikla.
Whether you knew him as John, Johnny, Dad, Brother, Brother-in-law, Pop-Pop, Uncle John, Johnny MAC, or Captain MAC, he surely made you laugh out loud or smile at least once. To know John was to know true generosity. He could have written a book on how to steal the check. John made everyone around him feel important, loved, and respected. He connected with all ages and all walks of life. He would drop whatever he was doing to help someone else out and taught his children the same values.
John served as a Union Township Firefighter and retired as a Captain 27 years later. Being a firefighter helped shape the kind of man he was proud, strong, heroic, and kind.
As a father and a grandfather, John attended hundreds of baseball games, football games, basketball games, swim meets, gymnastic meets, volleyball games, piano recitals, spelling bees, and chess matches. He beamed with pride and spoke as often as possible about his family’s accomplishments.
As the Patriarch of his family, John took everyone to Outer Banks, NC annually. His children and his children’s children have built a lifetime of memories on these vacations. Days and nights filled with fun in the sun and family dinners, laughing and connecting, can never be replaced.
If you are reading this, you are lucky to have known John McClung, as he was to have known all of you. The outpouring of love and support we are feeling during this difficult time shows how truly special he was. Let’s all take a few moments to remember times we have spent together with him and keep his spirit alive.
