Joseph Cornetto Obituary

Joseph V Cornetto of Forked River, NJ, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died at the age of 89 on April 25, 2020. Joseph was a decorated firefighter rising to the rank of Captain with the West New York, New Jersey fire department.  

Joseph was born in New York City, NY. Attended school in New York City, served in the Navy Reserve, and worked as a production supervisor for the Starrett Television Corporation. He married his sweetheart Catherine O’Brien in June of 1951 and moved to Ridgefield Park, NJ. Joseph began working as a Conductor with the New York Central railroad. Joseph and Catherine moved to West New York, NJ where he joined the town fire department in 1960. Joseph was active as a fireman and was recognized for valor and professionalism. In addition to his duties with the fire department, Joseph served as local representative for IFFA union and as an instructor at the NJ State fire school in Sea Girt, NJ. Joseph retired from fire fighting in 1985.

Joseph and Catherine moved to Forked River in 1970. And, for those 50 years, Joseph was active in the community serving on the First Aid Squad and as a voting poll worker for several decades. Joe loved cards, Atlantic City freebies, and classic movies. In their retirement Joseph and Catherine went on much treasured travels. Joseph stayed true to his NYC roots and was a lifelong Yankees and Giants fan. 

Predeceased in 2019 by his wife Catherine (O’Brien) and also predeceased by his brothers Victor and Alex. 

Joseph is survived by his children Michael Cornetto and his wife, Patricia, Joseph Cornetto,Jr., Karen Drammissi and her husband, John, Kevin Cornetto and his wife, Kathy, and Kate Beyer and her husband, Wayne. Joseph is also survived by his 14 grandchildren and a growing number of great grandchildren.

Burial at Good Luck Cemetery, Lanoka Harbor, NJ will be private. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Joseph’s life will be set at a date to be determined due to the current quarantine and social distancing rules.
