We are sad to announce the passing of Sheila D'Avino of Forked River, NJ. She died at the age of 80 on May 16, 2023. Sheila passed away after being ill for some time.
Sheila was born on February 17, 1943 in New London, Connecticut. She was raised by her parents Joseph and Miriam Giubardo (deceased). She graduated from Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn, NY in 1960. Although she was accepted to Barnard College, she attended Hunter College and briefly studied economics while doing clerical work for the electric company part-time. Like many women of her generation, she did not complete her degree but chose to become a wife and mother. Sheila, however, continued to pursue professional careers while she parented. She worked for contractors for the military as well as a Co-Owner of Adaptive Data Systems. Sheila was also the Director of Religious Education for St. Pius X Catholic Church in Forked River, NJ for more than two decades and served briefly in the same role at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Little Egg Harbor, NJ.
Sheila is survived by her sister Maureen Monteleone, her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Stacey D'Avino, and her daughter Dr. Karen D'Avino. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rocco, Lia, Gavin, and Katie as well as her nephew Paul and niece Lisa.
Spending time with family and friends was primary for Sheila. As a loving mother, she found time to drive to competitive soccer games in the tri-state area as well as volunteer as a Girl Scout troop leader for many years. Sheila was a wonderful mother who managed to make meals out of anything, (including crabs her children caught from the Barnegat Bay). Her home was open to everyone. She loved music and reading. She also served as a Board Member in the Cedar Glen West community prior to her passing. She enjoyed crocheting blankets and other items for friends and neighbors. Some of Sheila's favorite topics of discussion were politics and current events.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service gathering on Saturday, June 3 from 11-1 p.m. at Layton's Funeral Home located at 250 W. Lacey Rd. Forked River, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Vetwork Program. Vetwork is a not-for-profit organization that was formed to support Veterans' issues.
